Life doesn’t just imitate art. Life becomes an art form all of its own in this incredible penthouse loft space occupying the entire top two floors of 114 Camp Street. If the adjacent King William neighborhood is the heart of San Antonio’s constantly evolving downtown arts district, then Camp Street is its soul. Conceptualized by an internationally renowned art collector and designed by architects Jim Poteet and Patrick Ousey alongside interior designer Courtney Walker, this phenomenal gallery residence epitomizes contemporary, minimalist luxury living.

The renaissance of this grand, 80-year old former candy factory began in 2001 when the artist / developer visualized the expansive potential of the property, as well as the neighborhood, and decided to buy the building. The 5th floor was developed into luxurious personal accommodations while the 6th floor became display space for the artist’s own collection of contemporary art – though the line between home and gallery is blurred, with living, dining and guest accommodations throughout both floors. Stairway banisters are glass so as not to interfere with the lines and shadows created by the symmetry of the steps. The gallery includes media theatre space featuring monumental, projection screen display panels for viewing video and cinematic art.

Original concrete floors were resurfaced with ultra high gloss lustrous white epoxy of the type used in aircraft hangars. Walls, columns and ceilings are finished in white to make the most of the natural light which floods the entire two story space. Only the kitchen lacks windows, so specially designed chandeliers catch and distribute daylight, entering through a skylight, to enhance their incandescence.

The vast expanses of white wall surroundings were designed to exhibit contemporary art of immense scale and drama. Furnishings and rugs add tonal values and splashes of color, emphasizing the sheer size and scale of the living spaces. Glass is used extensively and creatively throughout. In addition to huge, pivoting exterior windows, many of the interior doors and windows are steel framed glass. Custom made Fire-on-Ice fireplaces are built from crushed glass along with plaster and stainless steel so that the fire itself becomes the focal point; the custom made terrazzo kitchen island contains fragments of crushed glass to reflect available light. As well as exhibition and display, long and short term storage and protection of valuable fine art was a major consideration of the interior design. Exceptional storage facilities are located throughout the building, including secure, climate-controlled spaces for the preservation and storage of artifacts.

For relaxation or exercise, the rooftop terrace includes a landscaped garden with sprinkler system and a pool with regulated current for resistance swimming. An extensive multi-level deck, made from rich ipé wood, offers the most perfect venue for entertaining and commands 360° views of the city and its skyline, while the ubiquitous Camp Street water tower stands tall, a landmark in San Antonio’s growing arts district.
